The New McGhee Tyson Route: Is It Worth The Lonely Existential Train Rides?

Writer's picture: Jared HagemannJared Hagemann

Knoxville has been abuzz recently following McGhee Tyson Airport announcing they would be making an announcement regarding a new airline coming to town.

Speculation ran wild. Would it be Southwest? Alaska Airlines? Something else?

Avelo is a budget airline expanding throughout the United States, and now this route offers a cheap trip to NYC.... With a caveat.

To get to the city, you'll need to take a easy train ride on the Metro-North Railroad, which will last about two hours. Not bad for an inexpensive trip if you plan to be in the city for awhile.

But, there's a major problem - lonely, existential train rides where you'll be looking out the window reconsidering your entire life.

Sure, the way to the city will likely be one of excitement and hopeful optimism. Perhaps you're going to a bachelorette party, perhaps you're visiting for the first time, or meeting a long distance love and considering moving there.

While in the city, tensions will rise. Bachelorette parties will discover where their friendships truly lie. First timers to the city will either learn to love or hate it. Long distance loves will test living together.

All this leads to the trip home, that two hour train ride back to New Haven to catch the cheap flight home.

At first they will review the photos on their phones, perhaps send some "I already miss you" text messages, maybe scroll instagram for awhile, but soon enough the draw of the window, the call of the abyss, will move them into an existential trance as the train moves towards New Haven.

Are these truly the friends they want to spend time with? Is this long distance love worth it? What if they quit their job tomorrow and just moved to the city, could they make it work? Would they faiL?

What is going on in their life? Are they just spinning their wheels, just going day by day in an endless cycle that takes them closer to their death bed with each passing moment?

Maybe they could try starting that new business. Maybe they could call that person back. Maybe they should break up with their partner. Maybe they'll march up to their boss first thing the next morning and everything is going to change.

Their life is going to get better.

Then, the train stops in New Haven. They collect themselves and move on to the airport, cautiously optimistic about the future ahead of themselves.

That or I guess you could just sleep through the train ride.
